Itching (pruritus) is a symptom of many different skin diseases in dogs and cats. Some animals are itchy everywhere. Others show signs in localized areas: by scratching at their ears or chewing at their paws. Determining the cause in each animal requires a thorough examination as well as a look at their history (including food, travel, and animal contacts). We may also need to perform some diagnostic tests to rule out parasites, fungal, bacterial and immune-mediated causes of itching.
Some skin conditions such as those caused by parasites or uncomplicated bacterial infections can be treated and cured.
Other conditions, such as allergic skin disease, have to be managed with a combination of strategies on a long-term basis. Some animals are only affected by allergic skin disease during certain times of the year (much like people who suffer from hay fever only during the summer months.)
Regardless of the cause, pruritus can cause significant distress (to animals and their owners.) Any pet that scratches more than a few times daily, over-grooms itself or shows any redness, rash or hair loss should be examined by a veterinarian.
