What’s cold and wet and smells?

Dogs rely on their noses far more than people do. Depending on their breed, they can distinguish smells 1000-10000 times better than we can, which is why they make such great trackers. Even the part of their brain that processes smells (the olfactory centre) is 10 times larger than ours.
